On December 11, 2025, OpenAI announced GPT-5.2. Three modes—Instant, Thinking, and Pro—are being rolled out progressively in ChatGPT, while the API is also becoming available to developers.

The direction of this upgrade is clear: stronger general capability, more stable long-context performance, and more reliable tool use—with outputs moving beyond “answers” toward more complete deliverables (e.g., polished spreadsheets, slide decks, and structured plans).

What’s New in GPT-5.2?

Stronger end-to-end execution 

OpenAI highlights significant improvements in agentic tool-calling, making GPT-5.2 better suited for handling complex tasks from planning → execution → organizing results in one continuous flow.

Better for long documents, long conversations, and complex projects

A key focus is long-context understanding, especially for tasks like file-based Q&A, long document summarization, and cross-paragraph reasoning—all of which are common in real enterprise workflows.

More “deliverable-ready” output: spreadsheets and slides feel closer to finished work

OpenAI explicitly mentions that GPT-5.2 Thinking delivers more complete results for spreadsheet formatting and financial modeling, as well as slide creation. Internal evaluations reportedly show improvements compared with GPT-5.1.

Three modes for different costs and use cases

  • Instant: Fast and ideal for everyday Q&A and learning. Strong for information retrieval, how-to guidance, technical writing, and translation—while keeping a more natural tone similar to GPT-5.1 Instant.

  • Thinking: Designed for complex tasks and deeper reasoning—particularly long documents, step-by-step math/logic, planning and decision-making, file Q&A, and deliverable generation.

  • Pro: Built for the hardest problems, emphasizing “high-quality answers worth waiting for.” Early testing suggests fewer major errors and stronger performance on complex programming.

GPT-5.2 is available across all ChatGPT tiers.

1-Plus / Pro / Business: Can manually select Instant/Thinking in the model picker.

2-GPT-5.2 Pro: Available only to Pro / Business / Enterprise / Edu.

2. Message limits

1-Free: Up to 10 GPT-5.2 messages per 5 hours. After that, it switches to a mini model until the quota resets.

2-Plus: Up to 160 GPT-5.2 messages per 3 hours (OpenAI notes this is a temporary increase and may be adjusted).

3-Thinking: If a Plus or Business user manually selects Thinking, the limit is up to 3,000 messages per week.

4-Pro / Business: Described as “unlimited,” but subject to abuse prevention and policy enforcement—unusual usage may be rate-limited temporarily.

3. Context window

1-Instant: Free 16K; Plus/Business 32K; Pro/Enterprise 128K

2-Thinking: Paid tiers up to 196K

3-(API: mentions of up to 400K context for developers, depending on endpoint and configuration.)

4. Feature constraints

1-In Pro mode, Canvas and image generation are not available.

2-If you want the “new spreadsheet and presentation” capability inside ChatGPT, you typically need Plus/Pro/Business/Enterprise and choose Thinking or Pro (complex deliverables may take longer to generate).
