Today Windows is experiencing a massive blue screen outage, and Sinokap has a brief look at what appears to be a massive blue screen caused by an update called CrowdStrike, and so far we’ve seen photos posted of blue screens on mostly DELL and HP machines, with a few ThinkPads as well.

What is CrowdStrike?

CrowdStrike is a security control software that is mostly deployed in corporate environments, so if it’s a computer for personal use, odds are it won’t be hit.

CrowdStrike announces Microsoft outage workaround

Workaround Steps Provided by Crowdstrike

A. Crowdstrike fixes the channel file 291 that causes this error, hopefully mitigating further extensions.

B. For systems that have crashed with a blue screen, some were able to return to normal working order after rebooting.

C. Those that keep rebooting with an infinite loop of blue screens may need to manually intervene to modify the problematic file. The following steps are those shared by engineers:

1. Boot Windows into Safe Mode
2. Navigate to the C:WindowslSystem32\drivers\CrowdStrike directory in Explorer
3. Locate the file “C-00000291-00000000-00000032.sys”, right-click and rename it to “C-00000291-00000000-00000032.renamed “ (your host version might be different)
4. Start your computer normally

The above is only a temporary solution provided by Crowdstrike, it is not the final solution, if there is an official update from Microsoft, Sinokap will update you in time.

Other problems of Microsoft

In addition to the blue screen glitch, Microsoft today reported an outage with its Microsoft 365 apps and services, affecting businesses and users around the world. “We are investigating an issue affecting user access to various Microsoft 365 applications and services,” according to July 19 data from Downdetector, a Web site fault-tracking software, as users in Japan reported problems with Microsoft 365. As of about 1:35 p.m. local time, there were more than 2,800 trouble reports, 69 percent of which were related to Onedrive.

There is also feedback from users that in light-colored mode, black borders will appear when files and folders are selected in the file manager.

According to user reports, the update also has other bugs:

  • The update changes the Windows Spotlight wallpaper to solid black, but it can be restored manually.
  • The message “Task Host window is stopping background tasks” appears during restart, but selecting “Restart anyway” works fine.
