The new feature, called Image Creator, is powered by OpenAI’s generative image model, DALL·E. You only need to type in any text description you can think of, and after receiving the text prompt, the AI will generate a set of images that match the prompt. Currently, Image Creator only supports English prompts, but over time, more language options will be added. Additionally, the new image generator will also appear in the Edge sidebar, allowing users to create images using text input prompts.
Image Creator is now being rolled out in the Bing Preview and can only be accessed through Bing’s Creative Mode. In the future, this feature will also be expanded to Balanced Mode and Precise Mode.
Based on the text prompt, Image Creator will generate a square set of four high-resolution DALL·E images. Microsoft Vice President Yusuf Mehdi stated: “We also make it clear that the images generated by Image Creator are AI-generated and include a modified Bing icon in the bottom left corner of each image to help verify that the image was created using Image Creator.”
Image Creator is different from searching for images in Bing. It works best when you provide a detailed description, using the format: “adjective + noun + verb + style.”
Here is an example: When we enter “College Girl” in the search box, the corresponding images will appear.
Microsoft has quickly integrated AI text-to-image functionality into Bing, which could lead to the search engine generating problematic images. Experts warn that text-to-image systems may be used for propaganda, harassment, misinformation, and other malicious purposes.
In response, Microsoft explained: “To prevent misuse, we have incorporated OpenAI’s safeguards and added additional protections to Image Creator. For example, we have implemented control measures designed to limit the generation of harmful or unsafe images. When the system detects that a prompt may lead to the creation of potentially harmful images, it blocks the prompt and warns the user. Repeated violations of our content policy may result in the permanent revocation of a user’s access to Image Creator.”
According to reports, users can delete their Image Creator profile and history through two methods:
Both options will delete your entire Bing search history, Image Creator profile, and Image Creator history, including all Image Creator activities.Microsoft stated that the company will continue iterating and updating the image generator. Specifically, Microsoft emphasized that it is working on optimizing Image Creator’s performance in multi-turn conversations.
In a statement, the company said:“We still believe that the best way to introduce these technologies to the market is by carefully testing them in public settings so that everyone can provide feedback.”
