How to deal with partial short circuit of notebook keyboard

The laptop automatically enters characters when opening the cover and closing the cover is normal, but closing the cover affects heat dissipation. Sinokap found that the keyboard cannot be disabled directly in the device manager, but this problem can be solved through the command prompt. If you also encounter a problem like a partial short circuit on the keyboard, you can try this method to solve it.

Solution

01. The administrator runs cmd. Open a command prompt, enter “sc config i8042prt start=disabled“, and restart the computer.

02. After the computer restarts, open the command prompt again, replace the command parameters, enter “sc config i8042prt start=demand“, and turn on the keyboard.

The above are real cases encountered by Sinokap recently. In the following, we will add some relevant knowledge about keyboard short circuits.

What could cause a laptop keyboard to short circuit?

01. Moisture or liquid spill

If the keyboard is splashed with liquids like water, coffee, or beverages, it could potentially short-circuit. Liquids could cause the metallic parts of the keyboard to conduct electricity, forming a path for the current, and leading to a short circuit.

02. Dust and impurities

Accumulated dust and impurities inside the keyboard could also cause a short circuit. Dust and impurities could form a conductive path on the circuit board of the keyboard, leading to a short circuit.

03. Static electricity

If the laptop is frequently used in extremely dry environments, static electricity could accumulate on the keyboard, causing a short circuit.

Dust and impu conductive path on the circuit board of the keyboard, leading to a short circuit.

What should I do if water gets into the keyboard?

If water gets into your laptop keyboard, you should immediately do the following:

01. Power off immediately

If the laptop is plugged in, unplug it. If the battery is removable, take it out. Even if the device seems to be working normally, power it off immediately to prevent short circuits or other damage caused by the liquid.

02. Tilt and shake the laptop

Tilt and gently shake the laptop to try to get as much liquid out as possible. Be careful not to shake it too hard to avoid damaging internal components.

03. Absorb as much liquid as possible

Use a highly absorbent towel or paper towel to absorb as much water as possible from the keyboard and other exterior parts.

04. Place the laptop in a ventilated area

Put the laptop in a well-ventilated area and let it dry naturally. Do not try to use a hairdryer, heater, oven, or microwave to speed up the drying process, as it could damage the internal components of the laptop.

05. Don’t try to turn it on immediately

Wait at least 24-48 hours to make sure the inside of the laptop is completely dry before trying to turn it on. If possible, it’s best to take it to a professional computer repair shop for inspection and cleaning.

06. Seek professional help

If the laptop is severely water-damaged, or if it doesn’t work properly after drying, you should seek professional computer repair services. They can open up the laptop, clean and inspect the internal components, and determine if any parts need to be replaced.

Please note: While the above suggestions apply to most situations, they cannot guarantee complete prevention of liquid damage to the computer. A liquid-damaged computer might require part or all of the hardware to be replaced to restore its normal function.

What problems can a short-circuited keyboard cause?

When a keyboard short circuits, the following problems might occur:

01. Some or all of the keys may not work

This could be due to the current not being able to flow normally through certain parts of the keyboard, causing those parts not to function properly.

02. The computer may fail to start or crash

If the short circuit on the keyboard is severe enough to affect other parts of the computer, it could prevent the computer from starting up or cause it to crash during use.

03. The keyboard may heat up

Short circuits usually cause the current to increase, which could cause the keyboard to heat up, potentially burning out some parts.

All in all, if your laptop keyboard has a short circuit, it is best to stop using it immediately and find a professional to confirm it, so as to avoid subsequent impact on the computer.
