Starting from the end of this year, Google will delete Google accounts that have not had any login records for more than 2 years to reduce the cost of maintaining free accounts and the information security risks caused by hackers.
This measure will start to be implemented at the end of 2023 and will include Google accounts such as Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar, YouTube, and Google Photos.
This policy change only affects individual Google accounts and will not affect accounts of institutions like schools or businesses.
1、Regularly log into your Google account and read or send emails through your Gmail account
2、Use Google Drive
3、Watch YouTube videos
4、Download apps from the Google Play Store
5、Use Google Search or log in to third-party applications or services with Google
6、Subscribe to Google Apps Store content through your Google account, Google One, news publications, or using your Google account.”
Deleting inactive accounts can be a tricky issue. To avoid user dissatisfaction, Google will handle inactive accounts in stages. The first accounts to be deleted are those that have never been used since they were created. The later deleted accounts will be done in phases, and Google says it will roll out this service very carefully.
In addition, Google says it will send multiple notifications before deleting an account. These notifications will be sent to the primary account email address and any provided backup email addresses.
Before Google announced this news, Twitter CEO Elon Musk also said last week that Twitter will soon clear inactive accounts and may handle more than 1.5 billion accounts.
1、Reduce the risk of unauthorized access and maintain service security
Inactive accounts mostly use reused or leaked passwords, and the chances of setting up two-factor authentication are extremely low. Hackers may access these accounts and use them to steal identities or send spam and other malicious content. By deleting inactive accounts, Google reduces the risk of unauthorized access and can maintain the security of its services.
2、Maintain the accuracy and currency of the user base
Having a large number of inactive accounts makes it difficult to measure the true size of its user base and may affect its marketing and advertising work. Therefore, Google may choose to delete any inactive accounts to ensure that its user base remains up-to-date.
3、Reduce operational costs
To reduce operating costs, Google has made significant layoffs, and deleting inactive accounts is also part of cost reduction. Hosting inactive accounts means extra storage space, which can increase over time. Deleting inactive accounts can help Google save on storage costs and allocate these resources to other work, such as improving services or developing new projects.”
